One of the funniest series ever on TV. Danny DeVito, Andy Kaufmann, Judd Hirsch, Tony Danza, Marilu Henner, some of the funniest people ever. It is my pleasure to write a review for this TV series. I visited the web region of Paramount Home Video for more information, since the residence has not yet been released. The web place stated that the place consists of 22 episodes in Dolby Digital English mono. There is no description of any extras. Here is a brief summary of the episodes.

7. High School Reunion: Louie is dreading his high school reunion because of a cruel trick played on him. Bobby offers to lift his site at the reunion under the way that Louie grew after high school.

8. Paper Marriage: guest star (gs) : Christopher Lloyd (not a regular until season 2) . Latka gets married to a hooker in order to avoid deportation.

9. Money Troubles: John and his wife are having money troubles. Alex offers a loan.

15. Friends: Bobby forgets to feed Tony’s goldfish while he is out of town and they all die.

16. Louie Sees the Light: When Louie needs surgery, he makes a promise to God.

17. Elaine and the Lame Duck: When a congressman tells Alex that he has no luck with women, Alex fixes him up with Elaine.

18. Bobby’s Enormous Break: Bobby quits his job as a cabbie and tells off Louie after he is cast in a soap opera. However, his character is soon killed.

19. Mama Gravas: Alex takes Latka’s mother around town during a visit when Latka has to work.

20. Alex Tastes Death and Finds a Nice Restaurant: After being robbed and and shot while at work, Alex quits and finds a safer job.

21. Hollywood Calling gs: Martin Mull. The gang gets star-struck when a motion narrate production company wants to search for them for their next movie about cabbies.

22. Substitute Father: The cabbies seize turns taking care of Elaine’s son, Jason, while she is out of town. Jason is studying for a spelling bee.

Paramount has finally decided to release the first season of TAXI on DVD. I won’t demolish spot here describing to you the prove or it’s premise but I will hold you in on what the DVD’s are like.

This is definitely what you would call a “bare bones” box station… no extras, no bonus material, no language or audio selection. The three discs advance in individual slip-cases covered with frosty photo collages made up of both promotional photos and stills from the exhibit itself.

But you wouldn’t be buying this dwelling for bonus materials… TAXI is the most heartfelt, hilarious, enchanting, memorable, and sometimes odd sitcom ever to have aired. Every episode from the first season is here, looking as first-rate as you’ve ever seen it. (Paramount has wisely added a “Play All” feature on the menu) The twenty-two episodes in this space are some of the best of the series’ bustle, including the heartbreaking “Blind Date,” the hilarious two-part “Memories of Cab 804,” and the Emmy-winning “Sugar Mama.” James L. Brooks (who would later go on to co-create The Simpsons) is at his best with this indicate, exciting you from stomach-straining laughter to obedient tears with only one line. And of course the note serves as “Cheers’” older brother since James Burrows and Glen and Les Charles would eventually go on to invent the other greatest display of all time.

Maybe the biggest bonus here is that the DVD restores all the scenes that were nick from the syndicated episodes, which makes all the dissimilarity. If you’ve only seen TAXI in reruns- as I had- you missed out on a lot.

Maybe there’s nothing gross with a bare-bones position… it makes you devour unbiased what you’re buying it for in the first location. There are two kinds of people in the world… those who adore Taxi and those who have never seen it. This box location is worth every penny, and Paramount has even confirmed Season Two’s release for sometime in the first half of 2005. Devour…

This is it! The source, THE PRODUCERS, the 1968 release with screenplay and direction by Mel Brooks, juicy parts by Zero Mostel, Gene Wilder, Kenneth Mars and others, and a well-deserved reputation as one of the funniest movie comedies ever. Filmed on a pittance (less than $1 million, cheap even by Sixties standards), THE PRODUCERS almost died unrecognized until it became a cult hit in Original York, L.A., Chicago and then, everywhere.

SPOILER GRAF: The dwelling is brilliantly diabolical: a contemptible Broadway producer (Zero Mostel) and his nebbishy accountant assistant (Gene Wilder) deliberately oversell a play with the form to build a flop and maintain the proceeds. They hire the worst possible playwright, director, and choreographer and deliberately insult the drama critics. But the play is so hilariously unpleasant it becomes awfully hilarious. The essence of 1960s camp: It’s agreeable because it’s so unpleasant.

It’s hard to overstate objective how splendid Mel Brooks’ first movie is. The rude budget forced a lot of outside shooting in Novel York City, and as a result the movie looks recent, not cosmetized. The premise of a play about “Adolf and Eva in a tickled romp at Berchtesgaden” was, if anything, more offensive unprejudiced 23 years after the raze of the Second World War than it is today. The leisurely, mammoth Zero Mostel stars as Max Bilalystock, a conventional big-time Broadway producer who has been reduced to seducing archaic ladies for checks to fund flops. Into his unlit life comes accountant Leo Bloom(Gene Wilder in the first of several Brooks’ collaborations) . Bloom is a nebbishly high-strung auditor who offhandedly mentions to Max that a producer could effect more money from a flop than a hit. This launches one of the most hilarious movies ever made, as Bloom and Bialystock device to earn the worst sript, worst director, and worst actors to create the most tasteless and bad play ever.

The humor here is some of Brooks’ finest. He expertley skewers Broadway egos, Nazis’s, and greed as he tells the narrative of the production of “Springtime for Hitler”, written by an ex-Nazi who quiet holds onto the conception that Hitler was a mammoth man. What keeps it from becoming an offensive movie is that the play is so hopelessly miscast and directed that it is unbiased a gigantic joke, and the fact that the audience knows that the Nazi is being taken advantage of steers the film away from the sunless aspects of that ideology and makes fun of everything Hitler was trying to construct. Wilder shines as Bloom, in his first major role, as he moves from loser to producer to desperate criminal, and Mostel shows his comely gift for sizable comedy in his portrayal of the morally bankrupt producer who prizes money above all else. The film’s funniest scenes involve bizzare breakdowns from Wilder, the hilarious alegiance to the defunct Third Reich by the playright, played with drawl conviction by Kenneth Mars, and of course the play itself. The opening musical number is a spy to glance, and manages to spoof every over the top broadway production ever in the sense that everyone alive to in the production, do Wilder and Mostel, prefer it so damn seriously.

The Producers has finally gotten the DVD release it deserves, and should delight anyone who loves Mel Brooks, and perhaps accept a few converts who only know him from his latter day flops(Men in Tights, I’m looking at you) . Brooks had 10 mountainous years of moviemaking in him, and he starts it out with a bang in this film.

I fill both the US and international versions of this film, and the international edition is grand better. Both versions carry a little sexual tension throughout between Leon and Matilda, and the uncut version is more pronounced in this plot, but that isn’t the reason to choose it.

The extra 24 minutes on the uncut version provides a deeper view of the relationship between the two as the film progresses. For example, in the US version Matilda never becomes a precise “cleaner” or hitman. It’s only hinted at when they shoot a jogger from a rooftop with blanks. In the uncut version, Leon takes her completely under his glide and teaches her the trade, including scenes where the pair hurry around killing dreadful guys and such. In the process, Leon teaches her the “ring trick” by tossing a grenade at a victim and keeping the ring and grenade pin in his hand. This scene sets up the final scenes in the movie in a arrangement that the US version left short and unexplained.

If you enjoyed the US version, you’ll probably cherish the uncut version more, if only because the characters and their relationships are grand deeper.

French director Luc Besson (”The Messenger”; “The Fifth Element”) made his U.S. film debut with this gleaming thriller of an Italian hitman who is untouchable. “The Professional” stars Jean Reno (”The Grand Blue”) who plays Leon, a professional hitman with ninja-like skills, who eliminates rivals for a mob boss (Danny Aiello) .

After a nasty cop (Gary Oldman) eliminates the family residing next door due to a drug transaction gone contemptible, Leon finds himself the guardian of young Mathilda (Natalie Portman in her cover debut) . Taking Mathilda under his helm, Leon teaches her the art of the “cleaner”. However, wretchedness lurks around every corner, and Leon must protect Mathilda from the same cops who killed her family.

Considered by many to be his masterpiece, “The Professional” was originally released internationally under the title “Leon”. However due to the feeling that American audiences might bag some material unacceptable, over 24 minutes of the film was edited out. Finally, Columbia/Tri-Star has made an great decision in releasing the uncut, international version of this top-notch film in the U.S. as it originally was called in August 2000.

While the film’s central theme revolves around Leon and his job, the subplot where Mathilda develops an attraction for Leon is reminiscent of the novel/film “Lolita”. The chemistry between both characters in a father/daughter relationship can be intense, especially as we seek that Mathilda is in her puberty-stage.

Jean Reno is advantageous as always, and Gary Oldman gives a chilling performance as Stansfield, the deplorable DEA officer who murdered Mathilda’s family in cool blood. However, the sincere scene-stealer in this film has to be Natalie Portman. This heavenly young girl radiates beauty and professionalism throughout the film. Her porcelain-looking skin, and her great brown eyes are well utilized in this film, making her character more childish, yet faded to a distinct extent. Portman proved to audiences in this film that she was no flash in the pan, and in her subsequent films, she continues to be a scene-stealer. She is truly Hollywood’s most gifted young actress.

In the international version, most of the 24 minutes that were left out in the film’s 1994 release in the U.S. mainly involves both Leon and Mathilda going on “cleaning sweeps” where she gets first hand training in the art of assassination. The other half of these minutes focuses on Mathilda’s attraction to Leon. Her persistent attempts to be intimate with Leon all fail, but we finally understand why Leon remains a loner when it comes to affairs if the heart. Some might be sorrowful about the belief of Mathilda and Leon sharing a bed together, but Besson paints this scene as one enthralling platonic cherish and not sex.

In wrapping up, I recommend this film for anyone who enjoys a nonstop, high-impact thriller in the same tradition as the “Matrix,” “Blade,” or “Humdrum Smooth”. Luc Besson truly is one of the world’s greatest action directors, and “Leon” captures his magic. An suitable, pulstaing film from beginning to destroy!

But beyond the presentation, these films (particularly The Man Who Planted Trees, Illusion? and The Noteworthy River) gain to the heart of environmentalism and stewardship. They are not shrill or glib, not reactive or stalely didactic — these films are awash with animism and life, each using this recent medium to exhalt the beauty of creation, and to exemplify the folly of excess. Back’s impressionistic style flows like a river itself, rolling and intelligent and churning, urging us to face the simple truths of our abuses, and to deem the possibility of a more harmonious course.

I’ll terminate there, because I’m haunted I’m making Back’s work sound contrived. Walt Disney once said that a good spicy film could not be save into words, and he was honest. I can only rush you to behold these truly noteworthy films, and to part them with the youngest generations.

I have heard of Frédéric Back’s The Man Who Planted Trees before by virtue of it being an Oscar winner for Best Absorbing Short in 1988, but have never seen it. When I found out that there was this DVD spot collecting all his work, I was quite alive to about it. It was expensive, but I ordered it anyway. And then I was left thinking or the next three weeks if my money was dumped into the drain for something I didn’t know what to ask.

Since receiving my copy of The Man Who Planted Trees DVD, I have watched all the though-provoking shorts, and bonus features. I am so amazed by his work — both as an animator as well as an environmental activist.

When I was watching the films, I was thinking that this guy is carzy — To consider that Abet hand-drew and dilapidated coloured pencils to complete every individual frame (background and foreground) of the film is unprejudiced fantastic. His films play with a continuous creep of images that is very distinguished like a stream of consciousness projecting life at it’s fullest — alert, active and vibrant. And to add to that liveliness is the suitably venerable Impressionistic style with the rich beauty, movement and colour.

To some extent, as I watched the “The Man Who Planted Trees” and “Crac!” I was reminded of Winsor McCay’s work such as “Gertie the Dinosaur” (1913) . Here is a man so dedicated to his art. When McCay drew 10,000 ink-drawings to obtain the Gertie go, Assist spent five years doing some 200,000 drawings to get his 33-minute The Man Who Planted Trees film.

That’s what I call dedication and passion to his work and art. And you don’t advance across people like that very often.

So is the DVD location worth buying? I enjoy it was money well spent.

Don’t listen to the clowns who can’t let go of Connery, TMWTGG is one of the hottest Bond films. The worst to me is Licence to Destroy and Tomorrow Never Dies.

I net it peculiar that the Bond Blu Rays from the gradual 70’s and the 90’s report quality is not as super as you would question, but the 60’s and earl 70’s are on point! This film quality is what I would have to call perfect. It has film grain, but yet the detail is high and 3D. This is the blueprint a BD should witness. This is perfect. Do not hesitate on this one.

My only complaint is that they did not release a 4th status and I had to pick the 2 current ones seperatley which broke up my collection appearance. I am not distinct why this was done, but I don’t like it. I prefereed them individually, but the box place was always cheaper.

THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN opens with Maurice Binder’s gun barrel trademark, accompanied with the “James Bond Theme” this time played on strings, instead of guitar. That was a proper innovation by John Barry, which he continued to exhaust for Roger Moore. It was clearly evident Barry was support.

The first camera shot is of a surrealistically exotic locale on a beach where a pretty girl towels down a mammoth ark man emerging from the water. The man is Scaramanga, the Man with the Golden Gun. John Barry’s familiar background music accentuates the Epicurean surroundings and the film immediately looks like it has returned to more familiar Bondian territory.

As the film unfolds many of the elements of the current Bond series and missing from LIVE AND LET DIE returned. There also seemed to be a more big residence as it initially unfolded. However, there were smooth undesirable elements that stagger into the film as it progresses.

Britt Ekland seemed like she would have been a natural throwback to the sex symbols of the 60s akin to previous Bond Girls such as Ursula Andress, but her vaudevillian interpretation of Mary Goodnight was a fatal flaw. Another flaw was the return of Clifton James as Sheriff J.W. Pepper. Their performances were distractions from the main state hindering the continuity of the account line.

The film flounders in the middle until it gets relieve on track when Bond finally travels to Scaramanga’s island for a face to face confrontation. The film follows the Bond formula here. The villain gloats as he gives Bond a tour of his lair and technical wizardry he has acquired. They dine over some dialogue on the merits of wonderful vs. imperfect and in the kill near to the final showdown.

I’ll admit that I always had a soft space for this film ever since I first saw it. It returned many familiar elements absent from LIVE AND LET DIE. For instance, we peek Bond return to the gambling tables via the Casino de Macao. Many fans greeted the return of these elements in a clear response. You can explore the damage on Andrea’s face and you feel empathy for her. Even though she appears here in the prerequisite sacrificial lamb role, she stands out as one of the best Bond girls of the series.

Christopher Lee’s performance as the enigmatic Scaramanga was refreshingly energetic. He gave the assassin an amiable quality on the surface hiding a darker side beneath the skin.

Roger Moore’s performance was an improvement over his first interpretation of Bond as a foppish and amusing dandy. Moore appeared to give Bond a tougher edge in this one even though the script attempted to undo him. Given Roger Moore’s previous performance and his meager cover accomplishments as Bond at that point in the series, the “duel between titans” it was not.

Some of the cinematography was very pleasant. Bond’s solo flight through the uprooted rock formations advance Phuket, Thailand to Scaramanga’s island was impressive. In the pre-title sequence there is an kindly camera shot that follows gangster Hood and Prick Nack through an anteroom. “Deadwood” either is your cup of tea or isn’t, and if it isn’t, then you probably have no business even considering prchasing these DVDs; the third season in’t gonna change your mind. If it IS your cup of tea, and you’re impartial wondering whether or not the third season meets the high marks situation by the first two seasons, allow me to answer: it does. In some cases, it even surpasses them.

The third season finds the camp in a general tizzy about the upcoming elections for mayor and sheriff, and Al Swearengen in a bit more specific tizzy about the impact the arrival of George Hearst has had on his life and livelihood. In a sense, the entire season is about the power play between these two titans, with Cy Tolliver trying to edge himself into the mix somewhere and Seth Bullock trying to figure out what his area is in the whole mess.

Amongst the other spot threads explored in this season: Jane’s growing friendship with the increasingly worried Joanie Stubbs; Alma’s opening a Deadwood bank; the feud between Steve and Hostetler; the oddly touching relationship between Trixie and Sol; Elsworth’s marriage to Alma, which may not demonstrate to be the bed of roses he had hoped for; the appearance in town of the Earp brothers, and of a troupe of actors; and, of course, Seth Bullock’s ever-present willingness to be grumpy with the infamous person, Farnum’s weasly nature, and Merrick’s desire to write about it all.

The plots don’t matter powerful, though. The dialogue and the acting are what earn this prove enormous. “Deadwood,” in its three seasons, had so many iconic moments that it makes most other shows stare like film-school projects in comparison.

In addition to the regular cast standouts — Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane, W. Earl Brown, William Sanderson, Brad Dourif, Molly Parker, Powers Boothe, Robin Weigert, and so on, ALL of whom do Emmy-caliber work — I consider special mention needs to go to Gerald McRaney, who turned up factual at the waste of season two but becomes an integral character in the third. His portrayal of Hearst is honest awesome. Not that he’s better than anyone else on the show; he fair immediately fits in with the tone of the present, so considerable so that it really feels as if his character had been there all along, lurking in the shadows somewhere.

Much has been written about the fact that HBO decided to destroy the series, and splendid unexpectedly; but don’t fret too noteworthy about the note ending on a cliffhanger. Not all position points are resolved, but there is at least a sort of closure; it’s like the first two seasons, where it feels as if a chapter has ended, but the fresh will continue. Well, it looks like the unusual WON’T be continuing — HBO has claimed that there will be two two-hour movies to wrap things up, but no filming dates seem to have been dwelling, and it’s been months since anyone had anything to say about that project — but if the series has to extinguish with the discontinuance of the third season, I won’t feel as if I was cheated too terribly badly. I’d select it had bustle for ten or twelve years, but hey, we’re lucky the doggone thing ever even got made.

The third, and possibly final, season of HBO’s critically acclaimed Deadwood had it’s section of plain entertaining moments to be positive, but the series as a whole lived up to the superb precedent location by the previous two seasons of the explain. A profile of down-to-earth artist Cynthia “Plaster Caster” that should er, own, the, er, attention of anyone fascinated by “The Sixties” or rock ‘n’ roll subculture in general. For the uninitiated, the “Plaster Casters” were a group of female “artists” (some may aloof argue, “groupies”) who earned a universal backstage pass of sorts throughout the 60’s and 70’s by immortalizing the southernmost regions of many a rock legends’ anatomy in plaster-based life-size sculpture. This would obviously guarantee many an funny war legend from (surviving) participants, and indeed, the most absorbing parts of the film are derived from such. One warning: The (somewhat erroneous) psychedelic screen art gives the impression that you might be in for a 60’s time capsule, chock-a-block with vintage clips and music of the era; but the documentary is shot ultra low-budget allege to video, all “exhibit day” footage with only an occasional aloof photo from the bygone days for context, and no “period” music to tell of. The overall “feel” is that of any one of the myriad of “reality” TV shows currently cluttering the commercial airwaves (of course, the subject matter here would be strictly “premium cable”!) The “extras” actually redeemed the investment for this reviewer-particularly the additional backstage tales that Cynthia tells regarding Led Zeppelin (somewhat harrowing, actually) and her explanation of why Kiss was “off” her list from the get-go. An involving companion fragment to “The Mayor Of The Sunset Strip” (ogle my review on this state) as an examination of the “almost renowned” who remove thier support from the aura of rock stardom.

I didn’t know what to demand when I picked this one up. I’ve heard mixed reviews about Plaster Caster, but I’m a mountainous fan of reality shows and “prick of life” documentaries, so I decided to check it out. I’m ecstatic to describe I was pleasently suprised! Ms. Plaster Caster is an inspiring, laughable, talented, and often pathetic person. There’s no inquire of she’s an unusual duck, but she determined does preserve bright company! Oddly enough, for a movie about reproductive organs, the film has itsy-bitsy to do with adult activities (only one breif moment with an on-camera casting.) It was also nice to study the unhurried Noel Redding (Hendrix bass player) in one of his last interviews. The swagger of the film moved along quite nicely and when it was over I felt I wanted more.

The valid news is, there is more! The DVD is loaded with plenty of intriguing out takes, including comical footage with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and an L7 “chest” casting sequence. I also liked the photo galleries and the Cast-O-Rama rotating cast gallery! With this feature you can have Plaster Caster’s art (both boy and girl) loop on conceal for infinity, if one chooses. Astronomical conversation video at parties!

I feel this documentary is edifying of a long hard scrutinize. (sorry about that, but I couldn’t resist!)

The highlight of this yarn is the background history and what transpired to beget this ‘missing’ memoir into a released DVD region.

The sixth season of the display (1968-1969) had a lot of scripts falling through. As a result, commissioned stories had to be stretched out longer. “The Invasion” is one such legend. The grand news is, the gravitas of the character and performance of the actor (Kevin Stoney) playing Tobias Vaughn helps elevate this account and keeps it entertaining. The epic is essentially him vs the Doctor, with Tobias attempting to employ the Cybermen to his support while the Doctor enlists the support of a newly formed secret paramilitary organization that battles alien invaders; UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce) .

I would say episodes 6 and 7 do trek on a bit, but there are plenty of station pieces that re-awaken you at the honest times.

As usual, sound and video for a program made in this time are sensational. And the extras and commentaries made by still-living cast and crew alone pay for this story; and then we fetch the record itself…

Here’s the rundown: In the 1970s, the BBC junked many programs from its archives. The Patrick Troughton era of “Doctor Who” was badly hit. As a result, most of his stories have been destroyed.

Fortunately, over the years, episodes are found in warehouses, returned to the BBC by countries who bought licenses to air the outmoded episodes during the 1960s and never junked the films themselves, or returned by collectors - who are far more philanthropic than many we’d otherwise give the title to.

Additionally, during the 1960s, home video recorders didn’t exist. (Another 12 years would pass before the technology became feasible… or common.) So people recorded them onto audio tape, often by dangling a microphone in front of the TV site.

As piece of the restoration process (and having seen many VHS copies, some work had to be done), the waste result of episodes 2, 3, and 5-8 are expedient. And this is the first professionally released version of the chronicle where all the Cybermens’ dialogue can be heard distinctly, with burly clarity. The previous releases I’ve seen honest didn’t have the cleanup applied and the dissimilarity is PHENOMENAL.

But the icing is on the cake: Episodes 1 and 4 have been re-created via cleaning and amalgamating numerous audio tape sources, with animation applied. And the animation is spectacular. It doesn’t lift any opportunities to go “over the top”, there is a splendid sense of the animators trying to be correct to the recent footage as possible (though some embellishments are inevitable; the master tapes and films nonexisting) . It’s very clever, grabs your attention, doesn’t seem at all shoehorned in, and the audio quality is spectacular. The extras go into the history of program junking, how audiotracks were recovered, and a well made share on how they were cleaned - I don’t want to spoil it here, but as with the main legend, there is not one fragment of extra that does NOT entertain or edify!

HIGHLY recommended.

I had the excellent fortune this week to understanding the newly released DVD residence from BBC of the substantial Doctor Who adventure, The Invasion, with the two “missing” episodes moving by Cosgrove Hall - amd I’m elated to portray, it is astonishing! As many Who fans will have seen the (rather awful quality) VHS of some years ago for this riveting myth, I’ll turn fair to the restored Episodes 1 and 4. How valid a job did the animators at Cosgrove Hall do? A very obliging job indeed. Turning to the exciting versions of the characters themselves, the portrayal of Zoe is amazingly faithful to Wendy Padbury’s fresh, with all of her subtle facial expressions and visual personality intact. And what a magnificent actress she is! The Jamie recreation, while certainly recognizable, is not quite as successful - he must have a more difficult face to render. As for the broad Patrick Troughton himself, well, for the most share the titillating version is a near-perfect recreation of my popular of all the Doctors (or perhaps it’s a tie with Tom Baker) ; at some angles, though, particularly when the Doctor is looking upward, the engaging character looks a bit like George Washington coping painfully with his wooden dentures. It’s lawful. Minor quibbles aside, though, quite a fair reconstruction of these missing episodes. Also noble are the engaging alter egos of the supporting characters, including the villain Tobias Vaughn (but for some reason, without his sluggish good seek in the challenging version, a physical trait that adds to the character’s menace) . The attractive action sequences are always capable, with a particularly convincing cow in Episode 1, staring in through the TARDIS window. Giving nothing away, the first few moments of Episode 1 involve a missle being fired at the just-reassembled TARDIS (Invasion followed Mind Robber in sequence), and this and the other special effects probably behold considerably better, less budget-constrained, than in the lost originals. As for monsters, there aren’t any in Episodes 1 and 4, until the last few moments of Episode 4, where they execute a most dramatic appearance, not to be missed by any Who fan. What a perfectly improbable map to recreate this masterpiece. I devour the telesnap-based recons a expansive deal, but clearly animation is the draw to go with these missing episodes. A triumph! And if we’re very very lucky, this might be the harbinger of things to reach from BBC/Cosgrove Hall. The bulk of the Second Doctor’s episodes are “missing from the BBC archives,” and likely to remain so, barring the opening of some Middle Eastern film library or wrathful collector’s shelves. These include some of the very finest, most well plotted and superbly acted stories in the entire series: Fury from the Deep, Macra Dismay, Power of the Daleks, Sinful of the Daleks, the two Yeti stories, and grand more. Clear follow up projects would include the Tenth Planet, Ice Warriors, and Moonbase, which are reasonably cessation to being complete in the archives. Some of these stories, and particularly the monsters and other special effects, may actually befriend from being engrossing - given the budgetary constraints imposed on Doctor Who in this early time period, the monsters aren’t always as convincing as they might be (portion of the charm of the series, I survey) .

While I don’t believe these films are quite up to the level of the other ample Japanese samurai films of the 1950s (such as Sansho the Bailiff & Seven Samurai), the really mountainous things about the Samurai Trilogy for me were in the reliable expend of natural surroundings, the magnificent Japanese leading ladies, and above all being able to explore Toshiro Mifune starring in color.

Regarding the DVD transfer, let me first say that I am a frugal guy who does not contemplate that any DVD, however wonderful the transfer, is ever worth 30 bucks. That said, I don’t know what all the fuss is about over the image quality on these disks. The film was not released in widescreen so the full-screen image is true. The only scenes which are perhaps too dismal are in the ruin of the second film, because it was filmed that method originally! The VHS is even darker as far as I could converse. I have 20/40 vision, yet I had absolutely no predicament reading the subtitles ever in any of the three films. The image quality in general is not Jeanne d’Arc but it certainly never came cessation to impairing my ability to appreciate the films. Finally, there are no special features beyond theatrical trailers on any of the DVDs, but the three-pack is also priced cheaper than any other Criterion issues (less than $20/disc) so why complain!

Otsu (the heavenly Kaoru Yachigusa), the quintessence of loyalty, has fervently sought to peruse Musashi once again, having parted unwillingly in Fraction II. In like manner, Akemi (charming Mariko Okada) maintains hope of seeing Musashi, having through a tragic turn of events damage up as a courtesan in a geisha house. Yet both women defy their seeming fates and separately see Musashi, a testament to the power of treasure. Musashi himself has not forgotten his admire for Otsu, expressed in his Kwannon statuettes made in her likeness. In a poignant paradox, Musashi escapes fame and the follies of this world as a farmer, having once been in that state and dreaming of fame.

In the meantime, Kojiro’s skill is finally recognized and he comes under the exhaust of the Shogun.

The romance between Musashi and the two women is tragically resolved, and a battle between Musashi and a group of bandits proves very costly. Yet Kensei maintains his poise and graciously accepts Kojiro’s challenge to a DUEL AT GANTRYU ISLAND. The perfection of Musashi’s technique evident in the fact that he carves an oar into a sword on the sail to the island, using wood against the steel of the deadly Swallow Cleave. Hiroshi Inagaki once more deliviers a beautifully directed and cinematographed motion describe. The color is surely the finest in the trilogy, in particular the opening sequence with Kojiro amidst the waterfall and rainbow, and the duel at dawn with its pretty red and gold -Atsushi Yasumoto’s photography is smart.Ikuma Dan’s derive is less triumphant and more calm and contemplative (though no less dramatic) . The pacing is more deliberate, but the strong characters and riveting storyline more than compensate.

Jude Law is a radiant actor and does his usual well-behaved job in this remake. If you’ve never seen the new you’d probably believe it was a decent enough movie. But if you’ve seen the unusual, with Michael Caine, you’d be wondering why they bothered to execute this in the first place- especially the butchered version that resulted.

Like a lot of latter day remakes, this is very grand a prettified version of the current. All of Law’s conquests have model apt looks- as does Law himself, for that matter. He’s also a kindly deal more refined, in accent and in manners, unlike Caine’s rather low Cockney. He moves about in magnificent surroundings. And that loses an considerable element of the setting of the unique. Alfie did not live in a magnificent world, and his conquests were not necessarily resplendent women; in enormous section they were women whom someone else desired- and that was what compelled him to seduce them.

Caine’s (and the novel’s) Alfie exploited used women; for whatever reason, the director, or perhaps the producers, decided this Alfie’s conquests had to be unusual, strong women who exhaust him as noteworthy as he uses them. That of course makes Alfie a obedient deal less of a cad; Jude Law’s Alfie is not leaving unhurried the wrecked lives that Caine’s did, and he becomes almost sympathetic at one point- a sentiment completely absent in the book and the unusual movie.

In the kill, this version misses the considerable Alfie- his inability to witness flaws in himself, even as he rationalizes his actions and convinces himself that he’s doing the true thing. The result is a shallow character gaze completely lacking the depth and impact of the unusual.

Why does Hollywood retain making remakes of classics that cannot possible be improved upon? This is a Shallow, tepid, very terrible remake compared to the Michael Caine, 1966 fresh. The performances, especially Jude Law (who is usually trustworthy in film) are a disappointment. The direction is uneven and stilted. There are offensive scenes. I will stick with the 1966 recent and forget this mess.
